Review: Lise Davidsen Shines, and Evolves, in a ‘Rosenkavalier’ Debut

The radiant young soprano returned to the Metropolitan Opera to star as the Marschallin in a revival of Strauss’s “Der Rosenkavalier.”

When the luminous soprano Lise Davidsen released her first solo album several years ago, she faced criticism over her repertoire.

Chiefly, that while she was just in her early 30s she had chosen to record Strauss’s autumnal “Four Last Songs.” In an interview then, her characteristic geniality gave way to exasperation. “It pisses me off a little bit that you have to be a certain age to feel certain feelings,” she said. “Teenagers have all those feelings, and more, in a day.”

With more measured calm, she added: “But I do believe that I’m entitled to take on those feelings, to take on the difficulties in life. That’s our job in opera.”

Review: Pulling Back the Curtain on ‘The Magic Flute’ at the Met

Unveiling the trickery only enhances the delight of this interpretation of Mozart by the director Simon McBurney.

The lights were still on in the auditorium — and audience members were still milling about in the aisles — when the orchestra struck up the overture to Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” at the Metropolitan Opera House on Friday evening.

The director Simon McBurney wasn’t trying to chastise anyone for being inattentive. He was gently easing the audience into a realm of clever feints, a place where everything is both highly imaginative and endearingly simple — and where seeing the trick only enhances the magic.

For his production — introduced at the Dutch National Opera in 2012 — McBurney flanks the stage with special-effects artists and elevates the orchestra pit. All the players, down to the last trombone, are in full view for the entire show.

Metropolitan Opera 2022-23 Review: Champion

Terence Blanchard’s First Opera is A Work in Search of its Identity

Terence Blanchard and Michael Cristofer’s “Champion” made its Met Opera premiere on April 10, 2023 to a nearly sold-out crowd. Just entering the main lobby, you were met with a 10-minute line to pick up tickets. But most importantly, you could feel the buzz in the space, a massive, diverse audience, ready to take in what is undeniably a major cultural event, especially in light of the great success from last year’s masterful “Fire Shut Up in My Bones,” Blanchard’s second opera, which opened the Met Opera’s 2021-22 season.

Entering the great hall, the viewer was immediately seized by the large black-and-white image of a boxer in combat, setting the stage for an intense evening.

Metropolitan Opera 2022-23 Review: Don Giovanni

Peter Mattei, Federica Lombardi, Adam Plachetka Lead Stellar Cast in Fantastic Production

On May 5, 2023, the Metropolitan Opera finally put on its new production of “Don Giovanni” for a packed house.

For those who don’t remember, this production was set to premiere during the previously announced 2020-21 season, but of course, we all know what happened. Fortunately, Ivo Van Hove’s production is finally here and the company will be much better for it in the long run.
